Soapstone
Countertops
Naturally nonporous. Acid-resistant. A stone with centuries of history in American kitchens.
Key Benefits
One of the only natural stones that is nonporous without sealing. Resists staining and moisture absorption without any treatment.
Lemon juice, vinegar, and wine will not etch soapstone. Its talc-rich composition is chemically inert to most household acids.
Used in wood stoves and fireplace surrounds for centuries. Handles direct heat without damage or discoloration.
Naturally darkens over time. Mineral oil accelerates this into a deep, even charcoal color that many homeowners find more beautiful than the original.
Dark gray to charcoal coloration that stands apart from the more common white and gray countertop options.
Scratches can be sanded out completely. The surface is permanently renewable — a feature, not a flaw.
Stone Styles & Appearances
Soapstone is a natural stone with a limited but distinctive color range — primarily dark gray to charcoal, often with subtle green or blue undertones. Unlike granite or marble, soapstone does not come in dramatic color variations. The following describe the main appearance categories available.

Where We Install Soapstone
Keeping It Beautiful
Apply Mineral Oil
Apply food-grade mineral oil to darken and even the color. Apply every few weeks initially, then monthly as the stone stabilizes. This is optional — soapstone will darken naturally on its own over time.
Daily Cleaning
Clean with mild dish soap and warm water. Soapstone is resistant to virtually all household cleaners and does not require special stone products.
Sand Out Scratches
Minor scratches can be sanded out with fine-grit sandpaper, then re-oiled. The surface is fully restorable. This is a characteristic of the material, not a defect.
Common Questions
Does soapstone need to be sealed?
No. Soapstone is naturally nonporous and does not require sealing. This is one of its primary advantages over granite, marble, and quartzite.
Why does soapstone scratch more easily?
Soapstone's high talc content makes it softer than other countertop stones. However, scratches can be sanded out completely — the surface is fully restorable. Many homeowners embrace the evolving character of the material.
What is mineral oil used for on soapstone?
Mineral oil darkens soapstone and creates a rich, even color. It does not seal the stone — it simply enhances the appearance. Without oiling, soapstone will darken unevenly over time as it is exposed to moisture and oils.
Can soapstone be used near a fireplace?
Yes. Soapstone has been used in fireplace surrounds, hearths, and wood stove surrounds for centuries. Its excellent heat retention and resistance make it ideal for these applications.
What does soapstone countertop installation cost?
Soapstone is a specialty natural stone. Pricing typically ranges from $70–$120 per square foot installed. Contact us for a project-specific estimate.
